Adolphus Marshall Joins Maltese Second Division Club

As the summer transfer window continues to wind down, players across Europe are continuing to make last minute moves, and Liberia’s Adolphus Nagbe Marshall is no exception.

The center defender has joined the Maltese second division club, Gudja United Football Club. The club announced the signing via their official Facebook page after the Liberian international had over two weeks of trial.

The acquisition of Marshall will be done on a one-year deal with the option of extending at the end of the 2017-18 league season. Marshall joined the Gudja-based club on a free transfer.

Marshall departed Liberia for Indonesia in 2009 for greener pastures. He last played for former Premiership club, NPA Anchor Football Club, before leaving for the South Eastern Asian country.

The former NPA defender spent seven years in Indonesia where he played for five different clubs.  He began his career in Indonesia with PSIR Rembang, where he played a single season before moving to Deltras Sidoarjo.

Still fighting to settle in, he played with Deltras during the 2010 campaign and joined his third club in Indonesia in just his second year playing football away from home. Marshall spent the 2010-11 season with Bali Devata Football Club, and moved to Persires Bali Devata where he established himself as an important player in the country.

After a year with Bali Devata, Marshall was now the target of many clubs that needed to strengthen their defenses. As a left footer, he could also play as a left full back.

After holding talks with several clubs in the country, it was PS Bangka that secured his services in 2013. At PS Bangka, Marshall grew into an established defender and soon became the team’s captain. Unlike other clubs where he played just a single season, he spent three years at the club before attending trials in Portugal and Turkey, where he failed to secure a contract.

While playing in Indonesia, the 25-year-old won four caps for the national team under James Debbah before being left out of games while he was an unattached player.

Now, with his signing of his new contract with Gudja, where he is expected to play regularly in the 2017-18 season, he could be an option for the national team that is still struggling to find a perfect pairing at center defense and an energetic left back.

He is expected to make his league debut on September 17 when Gudja kicks off the 2016-17 league season at home against Kalkara Football Club.

Gudja United Football Club finished the previous season 12th on a 14-team league table with 22 points from 26 games, just a point above relegated team Melieha.
