AFL Warns Political Aspirants to Stay Off Military Barracks

MONROVIA, Montserrado – The Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia, Brigadier General Daniel Ziankahn has warned aspirants participating in the upcoming elections to keep all political activities off military barracks.

Speaking on UNMIL Radio on Wednesday, Ziankahn said political aspirants contesting the election should stop making donations to AFL personnel at military barracks that aim to foster political goodwill. Instead, he suggested that they make those donations to the elderly and market women.

“The military barrack is not a place for political gathering or making donations,” he said.

Ziankahn explained that the AFL’s stance is not intended to disrespect any candidate; rather, he said “the military is a neutral force and stands ready to work with any winner in the presidential race.”

He even pledged that AFL personnel would assist any political aspirant who experienced a vehicle breakdown while traveling across the country.

“Personnel of the AFL have taken an oath and do not support any individual in the elections,” Ziankahn mentioned.

Moving forward, he said AFL personnel had been notified that no relative visiting the barracks are permitted to be wearing explicitly leaning political attires.

He added that the AFL will serve as a backup force to the Liberia National Police during the election and would work to maintain peace and order.

“AFL personnel will not be visible in the streets during campaigning and voting periods,” Ziankahn maintained.
