Inaugural Blue Cup Begins Today

MONROVIA, Montserrado – First division club Barrack Young Controllers has announced its first preseason tournament, which will begin today.

According to a release on the club’s official Facebook, the 2018 edition of the Blue Cup will be the first of many that will be hosted by the Go Blue Boys every preseason.

This year’s edition will feature eight teams –  three from the first division, three from the second, and two from the third division leagues. Barrack Young Controller I, LISCR FC, and Monrovia Club Breweries will represent the first division. Mighty Barrolle, FC Bea Mountain, and Barrack Young Controller II will come from the second division while the third division representatives are Samira Football Club and Muscat Football Club.

The tournament, which is expected to be played over four days, will run from Tuesday, May 8 to the Saturday, April 12. An amount of L$25,000 (US$189.39) has been given to each of the participating team for preparations while the winner will pocket US$1,000. The second-place team will walk away with US$500 and the highest goal scorer will walk away with a golden shoe.

The tournament will kick off on Tuesday, May 8 with Monrovia Club Breweries battling Bea Mountain in the opening match before the host senior team, Barrack Young Controller, takes on Muscat Football Club in game two.

It will continue on Wednesday, May 9 when the host’s junior team, Barrack Young Controller II, will play Mighty Barrolle in game one followed by Liberia’s first division and FA Cup Champions, LISCR FC, taking on third division side, Samira FC, in game two of the final day of the round one matches.

The semifinal pairings will see the winner from Monrovia Club Breweries and FC Bea Mountain battle the winner from Barrack Young Controller I and Muscat FC encounter while the winner from the Mighty Barrolle and Barrack Young Controller II game will face the LISCR FC and Samira FC game winner.

The semifinal matches will be played Thursday, May 10. The two semifinal winners will play in the grand final which will be played on Saturday, May 12. All matches will be played at the home of Barrack Young Controllers, the Blue Field, located in the PHP Community in central Monrovia.
