The group stage of the 2016 Confederation of African Football Champions League has come to an end with four teams advancing to the semifinals of the competition from two groups.
Among the teams that will be fighting for a place in the final, will be South African ABSA Premiership side, Mamelodi Sundowns, the club of Liberian international forward, Anthony Laffor. Also participating is the Moroccan top tier club, Wydad Athletics, the current employer of Liberia’s prolific goal scorer, William Jebor.
The Sundowns finished on top of Group B with nine points from four matches, with Laffor making two appearances.
They will take on Zambia’s Zesco United in an all-southern Africa semifinals matchup. It will be another test for the Sundowns that has surpassed expectations to reach the semifinals, beating Egyptian giant Zamalek back-to-back and managing a single win against Nigerian Premier League side, Enyimba Football Club.
Meanwhile, Jebor’s Wydad also advanced to semifinals after topping Group A with 11 points from six matches.
Jebor joined Wydad less than a month ago and did not feature in any of the group matches as players were being registered before his arrival.
It will also be a regional affair as Wydad takes on Egypt’s Zamalek.
It is the first time since 2011 that Wydad has reached this stage of the competition, while Zamalek last reached the semifinals in 2005.
The first leg will take place on the weekend of Sept. 16-18 and the return leg on Sept. 23-25.
