Liberians in the Diaspora React to “The Wealth of Liberia”

In celebration of Liberia’s 168th Independence Day, The Bush Chicken showed a group of Liberians in the diaspora a video of Liberia during the 1970’s called “The Wealth of Liberia” and recorded their reactions.

The film provides an overview of several economic and development projects taking place in Liberia during former President William R. Tolbert’s reign. The film appears to have been recorded around Liberia’s 127th Independence Day Celebration. The original film is provided below, followed by the reactions.

In their reactions, the Liberians, who consist of individuals who were alive during that time period and those born after, expressed shock at the level of development back then. Others expressed anger at the slow pace of development or in some cases, the regression of development. Still, others expressed hope for the future.
