BYC FC Wins 2019 Blue Cup

The 2019 Blue Cup has come to an end with the host, Barrack Young Controllers Football Club, winning its preseason tournament for the first time since its first edition in 2018.

The Go Blue Boys beat Watanga Football Club 3-0 to lift the Blue Cup as they prepare for their 2019 Liberia Football Association Super Cup clash against LISCR Football Club.

A brace from Trokon Myers, the 2018 season’s highest goal scorer, and a goal from skillful winger Kertu Jebo were enough to deny Watanga Football Club the chance of winning the 2019 Blue Cup.

Barrack Young Controllers reached the final of the competition following a 6-1 thrashing of Muscat Football Club while Watanga secured a place in the final after a 2-0 win over the feeder team of Barrack Young Controllers, BYC II.

The game was highly anticipated as Watanga featured high profile players. They included Isaac Pupo from the Swedish top league, the Malaysian Super League, and the Indonesian Super League. Alvin Dixon, who won the 2015 Lao Premier League with Lao Toyota was also on Watanga’s squad, in addition to Melvin George, formerly of Hanthawaddy United Football Club in the Myanmar National League.

However, the match turned out to be a one-sided encounter with BYC proving their strength over Watanga. Kertu Jebo got the match off to flying start with a goal in the first minute to give the hosts the lead. Trokon Myers added BYC’s second in the 22nd minute to make life difficult for Watanga, which failed to score a single goal in the first half. Myers got his second of the match in the second half to seal the win for BYC, which walked away with their winners’ trophy and a cash prize of US$500.

Meanwhile, Kertu Jebor, who got his name registered on the scoresheet once in the final, was named the tournament’s most valuable player and the highest goal scorer with three goals in two games.
