Younquoi Joins Grupee in Critique of Council Sitting Elections

GANTA, Nimba – Since Nimba’s County Council Sitting in Sanniquellie was held about two weeks ago, Rep. Larry P. Younquoi of the eighth electoral district has joined his colleague, Nimba’s Sen. Thomas Grupee, in saying that the sitting was not handled properly.

Following the sitting, Grupee held a press conference in Ganta where he criticized the manner in which the sitting was handled, calling it “staged managed” by legislative caucus members.

Although Younquoi did not explicitly say the caucus members were in the wrong, he called on fellow lawmakers for due diligence during future county council sittings. He made the comments on Radio Kergheamahn’s Speak Your Mind show last Friday.

On the elections that were held for the position of the Project Management Committee Treasurer, he said his colleagues could have asked “all those that want to be treasurer” to apply to the county administration.

He further recommended that applications should be submitted two months before an election to allow for proper screening and vetting by the committee and Superintendent’s office.

Additionally, he clarified that while his colleagues were not necessarily wrong, they should have done their homework as implementers of the budget law.

Younquoi’s proposed action would only be effective in 2019, as the tenure for elected committee members is three years, as required by the budget law.

The county council sitting is an annual conference of members of a county’s legislative caucus and citizens elected to a project management committee. As prescribed by the budget law for each fiscal year, members attending this gathering decide on the appropriations of a county’s social and county development funds.
