Court Sentences Woman to 10 Years for Killing Daughter

HARPER, Maryland – The Fourth Judicial Circuit Court has sentenced a 30-year-old woman to 10 years in prison for poisoning and killing her five-year-old daughter.

Oretha Thompson of Rock Town, Gbamaken Village, in Maryland was found guilty on March 28 of murdering Dwandi Thompson on September 3, 2018.

According to the guilty verdict read by Judge Geeplah-Tiklo Konton, Oretha Thompson committed the crime by poisoning food given to her daughter.

During the police investigation, the defendant admitted to the allegation and said she used rat poison. She said she had done so because her daughter often caused problems for the family, resulting in wasteful spending.

Judge Konton has warned those violating the country’s laws that they will not go with impunity.

“Remember that we are all equal under the Liberian constitution. As such, anyone who commits [a] crime against any individual will be dealt with according [to] law,” he said.
